The main development of the new Vega E launcher concerns the new M10 third-stage cryogenic engine, which will be powered by liquid oxygen and methane, and which will also contribute to improving the launcher’s environmental footprint by reducing emissions and combustion residues.
The rocket will have the capacity to release multiple satellites into different orbits in a single mission, and, unlike Vega-C, will be equipped with three stages. Two stages will be derived from Vega-C: the first, the P120C solid rocket motor, will provide thrust at launch; the second is the Zefiro-40 solid-state motor. The third, completely new, is the cryogenic liquid oxygen-methane upper stage, which will be at the heart of Vega-E’s preparation.
Thanks to the combination of oxygen and methane in liquid form, the new engine will be able to become more environmentally sustainable: The M10 will be able to re-ignite and will be equipped with a modular thrust that will allow multiple orbital manoeuvres. The maiden flight of the Vega E is scheduled for 2026.
