Turbopump

Turbopumps are the main components in aerospace engines.

They are designed to feed the combustion chamber with propellants from tanks pressurised to hundreds of atmospheres.

They have an enormous power density (such as 6500 HP in a mass of 250 kilograms), are exposed to extreme environments (temperatures ranging from cryogenic to over 1000 °C), withstand highly aggressive liquids such as liquid oxygen and operate at very high rotational speeds.

OMS in charge of the production for AVIO of some liquid oxygen turbopump components for the Vulcain 2 engine and the new VINCI liquid propellant engine.

Vulcain is a cryogenic engine propelling the Cryotechnical Main Stage (Étage Principal Cryotechnique) (EPC) of the Ariane 5 space launcher. Although it is ignited on the ground, at take-off, for technical reasons, it only contributes 8% to the initial thrust, instead providing the maximum thrust during the second phase of the flight, after the two lateral boosters or Powder Acceleration Stages (Étages d’Accélérations à Poudre) (EAP or P230) with solid propellant, which provide 90% of the thrust at take-off.

There are several versions of this engine:

  • Vulcain for the generic version of Ariane 5;
  • Vulcain 2 for the ECA version of Ariane 5 (higher thrust).

The Vinci is the first European endoreactor with an expansion cycle that uses the heat given off by the nozzle to the liquid hydrogen destined for the combustion chamber to drive the turbine of the feed turbopump instead of using an additional combustion chamber.

Compared to its predecessor (the HM7B), it will be certified to perform up to four re-ignitions (for a total of 900 seconds of operation) to ensure the release of multiple satellites into different orbits. The unloading nozzle, consisting of three segments made of ceramic material, can be telescopically extended after separation of the stage from the rest of the launcher so as to reduce the longitudinal footprint in the first stage of the launcher’s ascent from 4.2 to 2.3 metres.
